KYLE TINGZON

Filipino countertenor Kyle Sanchez Tingzon has been praised for his “powerful countertenor” (The Wall Street Journal) and his "lovely, plummy voice" (Opera Today). As a 2023 Young Artist at The Glimmerglass Festival, Kyle made his company and role debut as Goffredo in Handel’s Rinaldo alongside world-renowned countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo.  Previously, he also made his debut with Pacific Opera Project as Teseo in the US Premiere of Vivaldi's Ercole su'l Termodonte. He then debuts with Tacoma Opera as Father Hylebos in the world premiere of Tacoma Method

In the 2023/24 season, Kyle looks forward to his first season with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, his continued work with American Bach Soloists, and Philharmonia Baroque Chorale

Kyle also took part in Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’ 2022 Festival Season as a Gerdine Young Artist. There, he made his company and role debut in Stewart Wallace’s world premiere of Harvey Milk Reimagined, where he "stood out as The Messenger" (The Wall Street Journal). He also covered the Third Spirit in Mozart’s The Magic Flute

During his time at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Kyle has made role debuts in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto (as the title role) and Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (as Ottone). He has also performed scenes in Händel’s Xerxes (as Arsamenes), Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Peter Grimes (as Oberon and Auntie), and Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice (as Orfeo).

Kyle was a Colorado-Wyoming District Winner and Rocky Mountain Regional Finalist in the 2022-2023 cycle of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. In the previous cycle, he was a San Francisco District Winner and received an Encouragement Award from the Los Angeles Regional Finals. He also won First Prize at the 8th Handel Aria Competition held in Madison, Wisconsin in 2021. The year before that, he won third prize at the Rochester International Vocal Competition in New York, organized by the Rochester Oratorio Society

Kyle’s past performances in the Philippines include J. Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis (2019), Händel’s Messiah and Dixit Dominus (2017). He has also performed A. Vivaldi’s Gloria in D at the Svenska Kyrkans Gosskörsförening, a festival of male choirs in Rättvik, Sweden (2019). He was a singer and featured soloist in a performance of Bernstein’s Mass at the Esplanade in Singapore (2018). Kyle was also featured as a soloist at the annual International Bamboo Organ Festival in Las Piñas City, Philippines, a festival dedicated to the performance of early music.

In 2022, Kyle completed his graduate and postgraduate studies in Vocal Performance, with a Historical Performance emphasis, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studying under César Ulloa. In 2015, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Management, minor in Economics, from Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines. He also studied voice privately under Christopher Arceo, and is continuing private studies with W. Stephen Smith.
